Healing Species Character Based Literacy Program is the innovative combination of the Healing Species evidence-based Violence Prevention and Compassion Education model that brings literacy instruction to help young students gain confidence in reading and improve comprehension, vocabulary and fluency skills.

The LITERACY PROGRAM is 14 lessons developed for 2nd - 5th graders used in school settings, after-school and summer camps.

Rescued dogs visit every classroom and bring to life the lessons in compassion, responsibility, advocacy, and empathy.  

​

Reading time activities feature age appropriate literature chosen for that lesson including instructor "read alouds" plus student "read alongs".

​

The "read alongs" provide motivation and encouragement for all readers.  And, the dogs provide the comfort and attentive ears (all sizes)
